February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and We’re All About It!

The theme for TDVAM 2023 is “Be About It.” This is the kind of call to action we LOVE at RAPP. We’ll always be unapologetically about support, education, engagement, and empowerment. “Be About It” calls on us all to create a world free from relationship abuse. And we all play a part!

With that said, awareness of abuse is one thing, but if you really want to be about it, we have to learn how to build healthy relationships. You may ask what are some key ingredients in healthy relationships? You have to know about boundaries. Boundaries are yours to build and it can be awkward or scary to ask for what you need from your partner. When you trust your feelings and know your needs, communicating boundaries with your partner is so empowering. Trust yourself!

Another necessary ingredient in building healthy relationships is empowerment. Be About Empowerment. Empowerment means you have power and control over your own life. When you seek out ways to empower one another, everyone benefits. You’re actively participating in your own life by creating a better sense of community for yourself and others.

Educators, what can we do to uplift teens’ voices, t engage in learning and understanding about self-empowerment & healthy relationship? Create space in your curriculum to draw attention to these dynamics. As an educator, you can be about it by raising awareness, and empowering teens & young adults.

We talk a lot about community. Lets Be About It. Building a community where support systems are in place can help model healthy, loving relationships. If one of your friends is in an unhealthy situation, don’t ignore it, let them know support is available. If your friend is the one causing harm, don’t remain silent. Name it, and engage them in supportive conversations that let them know where you stand.
