BROOKLYN, NY – The Barclays Center is normally the home turf of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and the WNBA’s Brooklyn Liberty – but on Wednesday December 1st, the Truman High School Mustangs Boys Basketballers had their shot to play on the legendary hardwood.
“The kids were very excited. They were very happy to be there,” said varsity boys head coach Mike Stevens. “It was nice to see a lot of family – parents of the kids. We got to meet a lot of the parents for the first time… they were very excited.”
The junior varsity team is lead by head coach Taniefa Taylor. They took on Louis D. Brandeis High School from Manhattan and won that game by a score of 21 to 18. The varsity squad had a tougher night, losing to Susan E. Wagner High School of Staten Island by a score of 26 to 16.
“Coming back off of the pandemic and being able to see their friends and family and play on a professional court was the best part for me,” according to Coach Taylor. “I saw a bunch of them taking pictures on the court and sharing on social media.”
Photos of the games can be viewed by visiting the Truman High School Facebook page. Truman Media junior Brianna Wright was on photographer duty while senior Jacob Green had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to announce the games inside the Barclays Center.
