Wearing purple today to amplify our support and commitment to a safe and inclusive school community for all!
As you may know, LGBTQ and Gender Expansive, Non-binary youth disproportionately face bullying and harassment because of their identities, actual or perceived. Since this pandemic has flipped our lives upside down, there’s actually been an increase in abusive, bullying, harassment, and bias experiences. Contributing factors are increased isolation from support, being isolated with homophobic/transphobic family, and the increased use of technology.
Each year, millions go purple for Spirit Day to support LGBTQ and Gender Expansive, Non-binary youth in a united stand against bullying. Pledging to “go purple” on Spirit Day is a way for everyone — global and local brands and companies, world leaders, celebrities, neighbors, parents, classmates, and friends — to visibly show solidarity with youth and to take part in the largest, most visible LGBTQ anti-bullying campaign in the world.
You can wear purple, use a purple backdrop on Zoom or Google Meet (whichever platform you’re using), or watch and share a short PSA at the beginning of class.
