NEW YORK, NY – Competing under the bright lights of Times Square, Truman High School dominated Wingate Campus 44-10 to capture the 2017 PSAL Girls Wrestling Championship. Wrestling in Times Square as part of the 2017 Beat the Streets Benefit, the Truman vs. Wingate Championship Final took place prior to an international dual between the United States and Japan.
Opening up the match Truman’s Pearl Fletcher, the 2017 Cheryl Wong PSAL Outstanding wrestler, made quick work of her opponent, putting Wingate’s Fatoumata Diallo to her back for a first period pin. At 121lbs, Natasha Padilla put another five on the board for Truman with a pin of her own. Wingate got on the board at 130lbs when Naomi Henry pinned Truman’s Patricia Booth. Truman followed with pins at 139lbs and 148lbs, and a technical fall at 159lbs to build a commanding 24-5 lead. Wingate tried to change the momentum at heavyweight where the General’s Moridiyat Kalejaiye scored an exciting pin, but a forfeit at 105lbs and Truman pin at 112lbs sealed the win for the Mustangs.
